The Youth Development Centre (YDC) initiative was originally launched as a response to the lack of institutions which could provide safe and secure accommodation to the youth travelling to the Gilgit, Chitral or Rawalpindi for higher education. The Hashoo Foundation established the first Youth Development Centre (YDC) for boys in Rawalpindi in 2004. The successful piloting led to establishment of girls YDC in Rawalpindi and subsequent establishment in Giglit (2005) and Chitral (2007) regions respectively. The overall objective of the program is to provide conducive living, learning and social grooming environment for their holistic development. The students are equipped with life skills, IT and English language trainings which contributes in the overall personality and professional grooming. The youth development centers have benefitted over 4,500 students.

Tahira Nadir, — where aspiration and struggle move together
“My dream to step ahead and continue my education came true with Hashoo foundation’s support. This meant a ray of light, a hope for me. Without the financial support and provision of space in YDC, I could not continue my education”.
Tahira has been supported through the Non-CESP program in Gilgit for her higher secondary education. Later after doing her bachelor’s in commerce, she worked with Aga Khan Education Services, as an Assistant Finance officer and worked there for a year. For her higher studies she came to Islamabad and stayed at YDC Rawalpindi. “The environment, trainings and lectures have always inspired me and kept me motivated”, Tahira expressed.
The hard work turned into a pleasant result; this year Tahira got selected for Fulbright scholarship, USA for a one year program. She is currently studying Business management at Mesa Community college, Arizona, USA and also doing her internship at Mesa Chamber of Commerce.
